Widow's Application for Confederate Pension
THE STATE OF TEXAS I, Mrs. Maggie R. Ash, do hereby make application for a pension pursuant to the provisions of Articles 6204 to 6227, inclusive, of the Revised Civil Statutes of 1925 as amended by S.B. No. 27, passed by the Forty-first Legislature at its Fifth Called Session and all other laws of this State relating thereto. I am a widow of William H. Ash, deceased, who departed this life on 16th day of November, A.D. 1916, in the county of Atacosa, in the State of Texas I have not remarried since the death of my said husband; (or in case of remarriage that I am now a widow); and I do solemnly swear that I was never divorced from my said husband ___________________________________ and that I never voluntarily abandoned him during his life but remained his true, faithful and lawful wife up to the date of his death. I was married to him on the 14th day of February, A.D. 1868, in the county of Panola, in the State of Tex.

(if applicant's husband was a pensioner give his file number, which is evidence sufficient for proof of service.) First in Co. D, 40th Battn. Va. Cav. C.S.A.; The Battn was consolidated with another orgn. by orders dated Sept. 24, 1863, and formed the 42nd Battn. Va. Cav., which was increased to a regt. by orders dated June 8, 1964, and designated the 24th Va. Cav. 13. Name branch of service in which your husband served whether infantry, cavalry, artillery, or the navy, or if commissioned as an officer by the President, his rank and line of duty, or if detailed for special service, under the law of conscription, the nature of such service, and time of service Rank was: Private & corporal. (The information as to his service is taken from letter from War Department dated Nov. 17, 1930, which letter is attached hereto.) Wherefor your petitioner prays that her application for a pension may be approved and cush other proceedings be had in the premises as required by law.

THE STATE OF TEXAS Before me A.O. Strother, notary public in and for, County Judge of Runnels County, State of Texas, on this day personally appeared J. N. Key and Mrs. H. A. Bradley, a widow , who are personally known to me to be creditable citizens, who, being by me duly sworn, on oath state that they personally know the above named applicant for pension, and that they personally know that the said Mrs. Maggie R. Ash has been a bona fide citizen of the State of Texas since the year 1911 and that they have no interest in this claim.

You will note the application is sworn to before a notary public. This being true it will be necessary before the application can be considered that you attach your certificate as required by Article 6209, page 1770 Revised Civil Statutes of Texas 1925. If the above request is complied with and the application returned to this office, the rights of Mrs. Maggie R. Ash as a pensioner will have further consideration. APPLICATION FOR MORTUARY WARRANT
THE STATE OF TEXAS I, Mrs. G. W. Briley do hereby certify that I am the person to whom is entrusted the paying of the accounts and indebtedness of the late Mrs. Maggie R. Ash, who was a pensioner of the State of Texas, and whose file number was 49061 and whose original county was Runnels The said pensioner Mrs. Maggie R. Ash, died on the 4th day of October, 1933, in the town of Winters, County of Runnels, Texas. The pensioner died in the home of Mrs. G. W. Briley, who was related to the pensioner as daughter. That the warrant, which application is hereby made for, shall be applied to paying all or part of the funeral expenses incurred by the said pensioner Yes. I further certify that the warrant for the current quarter has not been cashed by the pensioner, to the best of my knowledge and belief. I am related to the pensioner as (Friend) Daughter, that my postoffice address is Winters, Texas. Signed Mrs. G. W. Briley Sworn to before me this 28th day of October, 1933 W. G. Bedford Notary Public in and for Runnels State of Texas CERTIFICATE OF UNDERTAKER I, Albert Spill, do certify that I am undertaker in the town of Winters, County of Runnels, State of Texas, that I had charge of the body of Mrs. Maggie R. Ash, who died in the town of Winters, County of Runnels, State of Texas on the 4th day of October, 1933. That said body was prepared for burial by me on the 5th day of October, 1933, and that I am of the opinion that warrant herein applied for should be issued to the said Mrs. G. W. Briley, who makes the foregoing application.
Signed Albert Spill CERTIFICATE OF PHYSICIAN I, Dr. J. W. Dixon, do certify that I am a practicing physician, and that I attended Mrs. Maggie R. Ash, in his last illness, and am of the opinion that his ailments were Chronic Nephiritis I further certify that I am of the opinion that the Mortuary Warrant above requested should be issued in the name of the aforementioned applicant, in accordance with Act passed by the Thirty-eighth Legislature and approved March 2, 1923.
