Elijah A. Sullivan was the son of Adam Sullivan & Eleanor, the first of their children to be born in Texas. He was born in Red River County on 26 Feb 1841. He was three years old when his family relocated to the area known as the Cedar Grove community, situated near the Kaufman & Van Zandt County border.
He is enumerated on the 1850 Kaufman Co TX Census with his parents and on the 1860 census Elijah is listed as age 20, living in the household of his parents in Van Zandt Co TX. In 1852 his father sold the original cabin and land he owned to William Wills and moved across the county line to land he had purchased in 1850.
By 1861 Elijah had moved out on his own and when the war between the states incited the men of Texas to enlist in the Confederate States Army he did so in Co G 3rd Texas Cavalry. His service received recognition in the book "Texans Who Wore The Gray" by Sidney Smith Johnson.
In 1864 Elijah reported owning 7 slaves, worth $7,000.00.
After the war, on 19 Jun 1865 he married Martha Jane "Mattie" Huff. She was born
16 Mar 1849, daughter of David V & Martha Davis Huff. They are living near the Sullivans on the 1860 Van Zandt Co TX census, with Martha J. listed as age 10.

In 1884 Elijah's mother died and on 3 Sep 1886, Mattie died, leaving Elijah with ten children to raise. He did so for ten years, seeing many of his children marry and have children of their own. Ellen and Mattie are both buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
On 29 Apr 1896, Elijah married Miss Estelle Hill, daughter of William H. & Ann Hill of Kaufman County.

On Wednesday last at Kemp, E. A. Sullivan of this place and Miss Estelle Hill of Kemp were duly joined together in the Holy bonds of Wedlock. The newly married couple arrived in Wills Point on the night train and will make this their future home.

Elijah died 12 Feb 1913 and was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery next to Mattie and his parents.

Several from here attended the funeral of Uncle Elige Sullivan at Cedar Grove Friday. He being well known in this community had many friends who regretted to learn of his death.

A Pioneer Van Zandter Dies at Cedar Grove
Mr. Elijah Sullivan died at his late residence in the Cedar Grove community, five miles northwest of Wills Point, last Wednesday evening, February 12, 1913, at 9:45 o'clock, death resulting from appendicitis after an illness of about a weeks duration. The remains were interred in the Cedar Grove Cemetery Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the funeral services being conducted by the Masonic lodge, assisted by Rev. Geo. F. Robertson, pastor of the Wills Point Presbyterian Church. A large number of neighbors and friends were present to pay a last tribute of respect to the deceased.
Elijah Sullivan was a native Texan and a pioneer Van Zandter, being one of the oldest, if not the oldest settler in this county. He was born in Red River County, Texas, February 26, 1841, and came to Van Zandt County with his father, Adam Sullivan, and family in 1844 when he was only three years of age and has resided in this county since. He received his education under the trying conditions of the early settler, his father building the first school house and hiring the teacher.
Mr. Sullivan enlisted in Dallas as a Confederate soldier in July, 1861, Company G., Third Texas Cavalry, Ross' Brigade. His first service was a forced march to Springfield, Missouri, where they joined Gen. Price. He was in Wilson's Creek battle August 10, following. He was in more than fifty general engagements, including Blue Ridge, Prairie Grove, Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. He enjoyed good health throughout and never received a wound of any kind. He was a typical Southerner and a believer in Texas and her future.
In May 1865, Mr. Sullivan was married to Miss Mattie Huff. She became the mother of ten children, all of whom are still living. She died September 3, 1886. On April 29, 1896, Mr. Sullivan was united in marriage to Miss Estelle Hill, who survives him, The surviving children are: Mrs. W. D. Irby, Graham, Oklahoma, Dr. W. R. Sullivan, San Antonio, A. A. Sullivan, Fort Worth, Mrs. C. L. Feagan, Fort Worth, Mrs. S. E. Gray, Dallas, D. H. Sullivan, Leland, Mississippi, J. A. Sullivan, Dallas. All of the children except the two last named attended the funeral. The following were also present; S. E. Gray and children, Dallas, C. L. Feagan, Fort Worth, Mrs. S. A. Sullivan and son, Fort Worth, Miss May Sullivan, Leland, Mississippi, and Master Robert Irby, Graham, Oklahoma.
Mr. Sullivan was a consistent Christian, being a member of the Presbyterian Church; and a useful citizen and good neighbor. He was a Mason.

Elijah's second wife, Estella, died 25 May 1914 and is buried in an unmarked grave at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Estella Sullivan, widow of the late Elijah Sullivan of Cedar Grove Community, died Monday, May 25th in a sanitarium in Fort Worth of pneumonia, which she contracted after an operation. The remains were buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery Tuesday. Nee Miss Estella Hill, was 41 years of age. She married Mr. Sullivan April 29, 1896 and resided with him in the Cedar Grove Community until his death on February 12, 1913 going to Rochester about a year ago. She was a member of the Baptist Church. The remains were accompanied by the mother of the deceased, Mrs. A. E. Hill of Rochester, a sister, Mrs. W. B. Hill and husband and children of Rochester, Dr. Will Sullivan and wife of Fort Worth and Miss Mary Sullivan of Dallas.
