| He was the son of John Sheltman & Dorcas Tuning, born
24 Jan 1797 in Rockbridge Co VA. He married Amanda M Ruff (1807 VA
- 1852 TX), daughter of John Millslagel Ruff & Martha Wallace, in Rockbridge
on 12 May 1825. They had 5 children & came to TX about 1847.
After Amanda's death Jacob married in Kaufman Co 28 Jan 1855 to Electa Sawyer Newton, a young widow. Electa had 2 children by her first marriage & together they had 2 children. Jacob was a slave owner - he had 5 slaves in 1850 & 3 slaves in 1860. He died 24 May 1868. He is buried beside Electa in the Sheltman Family Cemetery near Forney in Kaufman County.
