Electa Sawyer Newton Sheltman

Electa (Sawyer) Newton Sheltman

Born 26 Nov 1816 to George Sawyer & Lucy Ann Hoar in Bolton, Worcester Co MA.  She married 02 Sep 1839 in Sutton MA to Ancil Clark Newton.  They came to Texas about 1847.
After Ancil's death Electa married Jacob G Sheltman in Kaufman County on 28 Jan 1855.  Jacob died in Kaufman County 24 May 1868, leaving Electa to raise 4 children on her own & manage her farm.
When Electa married Jacob Sheltman her assets were worth more than his - according to the 1860 Census his land was valued at $960.00 while hers was worth $3,143.00.  There was a Prenuptial Agreement signed by them  26 Jan 1855 which stated that his property was his to do with as he saw fit and that her real & personal property was hers to do with as she saw fit.  Before Jacob's death he had contracted to buy 640 acres of land, but it was tied up in litigation.  After Jacob died Electa went ahead & bought the land, an uncommon & risky move for a woman at the time.
Electa died 11 Jul 1897 & is buried beside both her husbands on the old Sheltman place which is now known as the Sheltman Family Cemetery in Kaufman County. It was one of the first cemeteries in the Forney area.
