
| Asa, who was called "Ritt" was born 1821 in the Arkansas Territory
at what is now Pulaski County.
Both his parents, John & Jane Blair Newton, died in 1822 and Asa was raised by relatives in MO. In 1847 he came to Texas from Neosha, Newton Co MO, married Mary "Polly" Powers and they moved to Ellis County TX that same year.. Asa served in the Confederacy in the 12th Texas Cavalry under Col. W H Parsons, but returned from the war in ill health and disheartened at what was left of his farm in Ovilla. He then moved to the town of Brooklyn (Forney) in Kaufman County in 1868 and became a land broker. However, Asa never fully regained his health after the Civil War and he died in 1871. He is buried at the Sheltman-Gilkey Family Cemetery near Forney. Children of Asa Richardson Newton:
