| William "Billy" Love was born at Fishing Creek, York Co SC 12
Dec 1786, son of Andrew Love & Anna Latimore. His father, Andrew, was
a Col., under Gen. Sumter, at "King's Mountain" during the Rev. War.
William started moving west at an early age & was in Livingston
Co KY in 1810, where he married Nancy Amelia Kirk that same year.
By 1822 he was in Hardeman Co TN and in Pike Co MO by 1840. He is considered
to be one of the earliest known residents of what was to be Kaufman County,
arriving here in 1842 when the area was still the Nacogdoches Territory.
He fought in the Mexican-American War and was in the Army of the Texas
Republic, and he is one of the few settlers who actually lived in the old
fort known as Kingsborough. He personally knew William P King, W A Ferris,
Robert Terrell, Sam Houston & many other early dignitaries who shaped
early Texas.
William was a farmer & a slave owner and brought slaves from SC to Kaufman who were left to him in his father's probate. He died 15 Jan 1851, exactly one month to the day after his wife Nancy died on 15 Dec 1850 - apparently victims of an epidemic. They are thought to be buried at what is now known as the Kaufman Pioneer Cemetery. However, there are Bible records of the James & William Carter family (William's daughter, Anna, was married to James M Carter) in the county today that refer to the burial site as the Love Cemetery. The place is located on land William Love owned-on the C A Lovejoy Survey-and it was left to his son, James, who also lived on the land. James, Anna & the Carters are buried at the site, as are some of the Love family slaves. Children of William Love:
