John Love Irvine

Submitted by Kathey Kelley Hunt

John Irvine was born early in 1844 at San Augustine Co TX, only child of William Duncan Irvine & Caroline Love.  His grandfather, John Gilbert Love came to Texas in the 1820's and his father, uncles and grandmother Irvine arrived in the republic in 1834.

John's mother died in 1844 and in 1846 his father moved to what was then Henderson County, in that portion that became Kaufman County in Feb 1848.   He was enumerated on the 1850 Kaufman Co TX Census in his father's household as age 6.

In 1851 his father remarried to Sarah Matilda Hurst and within a decade John had 4 siblings: Josephus, Mary, Minerva and William Peter.

At the onset of the war between the states, John Love Irvine and his father both enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 28 Oct 1861 at Camp Hebert, sworn in by H W Kyser.  They were in Co G 12th Texas Cavalry under the command of W H Parsons.  However, John's father was in failing health and was discharged 30 Jan 1862, leaving John to continue in the conflict alone.

John never married.  He was killed in the Battle at LaFarouche in Louisiana on 21 Jun 1863.  It is not known where he is buried.
