
William Henry Daugherty was born 1805 in TN, son of William Daugherty and Sarah Priscilla "Sallie" Bunch. He was one of 8 sons and 2 daughters born to the couple. He married Sarah Cecil (1802-1842), daughter of Thos Cecil and Jenny Stratton in TN circa 1822. By 1830 William and his wife, his 4 sons, his father and mother, his sister -Zilphia Richerson, and all his brothers -Nathaniel, Matthew, George W, James M, John David, Henry and Andrew Jackson, were living in Pulaski Co AR. By 1840 the majority of them had moved on to Van Buren Co AR, where Sarah died and is buried. When she died her twin Sons were only 6 months old. William, most of his brothers and 4 of his sons received land through Mercer's Colony and had Headrights in Kaufman County. The majority of the family members were in TX by 1848, including his mother. In 1846 William was living in Cherokee Co TX, where he was elected Probate Judge and Performed the first marriage in that county. He met and married Matilda Padgett(1797-1876), a widow, in 1852, in Cherokee County, then brought her to live in Kaufman County. Three of William's sons became Sheriffs in Texas - Harrison was Sherriff in Caldwell Co, William was Sheriff in Frio Co and John was Sheriff of Kaufman Co. Harrison also served in the Army during the Mexican-American War and was an Indian Fighter in southern Texas and was the focus of stories in the book, "Early Settlers and Indian Fighters in Southwest Texas". Six of his sons served in the Confederacy in some capacity and they all survived the war. William signed his Mercer's Colony papers 29 Apr 1850 and received 320 acres of land - Kaufman Original Survet # A-127. He was a Farmer and a Methodist Minister, and he lived on his Headright which was located just northwest of Scurry, near Crandall. William was fondly called "Uncle Billy" in his old age. He died 13 Sep 1887 and is thought to be buried in the Blackland Cemetery near Crandall TX. Children of Rev. William Daugherty:
