James M. Daugherty

James M. Daugherty was born in Morgan County, TN 30 Nov 1826 to Rev. William Henry Daugherty and Sarah Cecil.  By 1830 his family had moved to Pulaski County, AR and they were in Van Buren County, AR by 1840.  That is where his Mother died in 1842.

When James was 19 his father brought him to Nacogdoches Territory in the newly formed State of Texas.  They came with several of his uncles, his grandmother - Sallie Bunch Daugherty, and his brothers and sisters.  In 1846 the area where they were living was made Cherokee County and by 1850 James, his father, his uncles and brothers had applied for land through Jon Fenton Mercer's Colony.

James married Sarah Ann "Sallie" Dannica (1834-1895) in Cherokee County, TX on 25 mar 1851, with his father performing the ceremony.  They had seven children.

When the Civil War erupted James was mustered into a Confederate Home Guard unit as a Private.  The unit was called the Mustang Rangers No. 1 and was organized 08 Jul 1861, but they never saw action, although some of John's brothers did enlist into active Confederate units during the war.

James died 09 May 1885 in Crandall Texas and is buried at Blackland Cemetery near there.
