Cottonwood School, 1911

Submitted by Judy and Doug Merchant

Cottonwood School, 1911
Cottonwood School near Scurry, 1911
Photo belonged to Fred Merchent who was seven years old in the photo.

This is our grandfather's Cottonwood School photo dated 1911.  The school was located in Kaufman County near Scurry, Texas.  Our grandfather's name was James Fredrick Merchent and he was seven years old in this school photo; his sister, Mary Ellen, also attended this school in 1911.

We are related to the Merchent's and Brinton's.  James Fredrick Merchent was born on February 12, 1904 in Scurry Rt. 2, Kaufman, Texas, and passed away on May 19, 1994 in Texarkana, Texas.  His father's name was Robert H. Merchant, b. Oct. 1869, Walker Co. Texas.  The marriage certificate states Robert married Callie Donia Brinton on February 13, 1891.

Our grandfather was told by his great aunt (Mahulda Jane Merchant Reed) that his father (Robert) died in 1906, but have not found any proof.  According to our grandfather, Robert's father's name was Calvin, Cale or Caleb but have not been able to prove it.  Our grandfather claimed there was Native American in the blood line and it shows in the family photos.
