O.S. Griffin Rites Friday

O.S. Griffin, a former resident of Kaufman County, passed away in Kaufman early Thursday morning - Christmas Day. He was moved to the Anderson-Clayton Funeral Home in Terrell and later, to his home at Rylie to repose until the funeral hour.

Services were held from the First Baptist Church in Rylie at 2:30 p.m. Friday with the Rev. D.B. Russell officiating.

Oston S. Griffin, a native of Mississippi, was born on February 22, 1884. He came to Texas and to Kaufman County as a young man and lived at Kemp and Mabank before moving to Rosser in 1917.

He was engaged in farming at Rosser for many years and in 1950 moved to Rylie in Dallas County, where he worked as a painter.

Mr. Griffin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rylie.

He and Miss Allie Ann Orman were married on July 28, 1904. Seven children were born to the couple, two of whom preceded their father in death.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Allie Ann Griffin of Rylie; four sons, D.E. Griffin of Moultree, Georgia, Vernon Griffin of Rosser, Raymond J. Griffin of Fort Worth, and Jack W. Griffin of Dallas; one daughter, Mrs. Odus Campbell of Dallas; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Kate Shelton of Kemp, and other relatives.

Oston S. Griffin was the son of Thomas Asbury Griffin and Sarah Tobiatha Ellison, and a brother to my ggf Thomas Henry Griffin.

Allie A. Griffin died August 26, 1971 in Whitney, Hill County, Texas, and was buried in Rylie Cemetery next to her husband Oston. Her death certificate gives her birth date as November 21, 1889 in Texas and lists her father as Jim Armon (not Orman) and mother as Mary Jane Lambeth. Her usual residence is Dallas. The informant was Mrs. Louise Campbell, presumably her daughter.

The children of Oston and Allie Griffin:

  1. Floy Griffin, born about 1906, probably in Kaufman County. Since she was not listed as a survivor in Oston's obituary it is assumed that she died before 1958. She may have been the Floy Griffin who married Harry Jones on July 3, 1925 in Kaufman County.
  2. Dewell E. Griffin, born about 1908, probably in Kaufman County. He married Ella Rice on October 22, 1927. They had two children born in Kaufman County: Margerette Gene Griffin, born September 17, 1930 in Rosser, and Dewell E. Griffin, born October 2, 1932.
According to his father's obituary Dewell E. Griffin, Sr. was in Georgia by 1958.
  3. Vernon Lee Griffin, born October 12, 1910 in Van Zandt County, Texas, according to his death certificate. On September 29, 1934 he married Irene Lowry in Kaufman County. Vernon was killed in an accident when a brush hog (weed cutter) fell from a jack and pinned his head underneath it. His usual residence was given as Scurry RFD #1, Kaufman County. He was buried in Kaufman Cemetery. Vernon and Irene Griffin had at least two children in Kaufman County. Mary Virginia Griffin, born December 2, 1937. She may be the Mary Virginia Griffin who married Don Charles Burt in Kaufman County on September 6, 1957. Second child was Robert Oston Griffin, born January 7, 1947.
  4. Raymond James Griffin, born February 24, 1914. Married Annie Pauline Fowler on August 26, 1933 in Kaufman County. Had at least two children in Kaufman County:
Bobbie Ray Griffin, born December 2, 1934, and Larry Lewis Griffin, born May 4, 1944. I believe Raymond died July 26, 1999 and his residence was Whitney, Hill County, Texas (Social Security Death Index). There is no death certificate for him in the Hill County Courthouse, so he may have died elsewhere.
  5. Mary Louise Griffin, born May 12, 1920 in Kaufman County. Probably married Odus Lee Campbell. Odus Lee Campbell died in Whitney on February 10, 1979. His birth was listed as February 13, 1920 in Terrell, the son of Odus Weaver Campbell and Della Mae Baker. He was buried in Hillcrest Garden of Memory, near Whitney. His survivors included his wife Louise, brother T.J. Hennessee of ;Mt. Vernon; sister Mrs. Myrtle Rose of Terrell; daughter Mrs. Elaine Clinkscales of Detroit, Michigan. I do not know why his brother would have a different last name.
  6. Joe E. Griffin, born March 9, 1923 in Kaufman County. Died presumably before 1958 since he was not listed as a survivor in his father's obituary.
  7. Jack Weldon Griffin, born June 6, 1926 in Kaufman County. Probably was the Jack Griffin who married Rose Ann Pechal on September 15, 1945 in Kaufman County. Listed as living in Dallas in his father's obituary of 1958.
