Burr Ilie Cockrell was a native of Fairfield district, South Carolina where he was born April 1, 1852.   His parents moved to Pontotoc county Mississippi in November, 1858 near Tupelo where he grew to manhood and married Miss Florence Simmons on July 18, 1877.  To this union seven daughters were born, his wife and three daughters having preceded him in death.

He leaves the following survivors:  Four daughters: Mrs. R. R.(Catherine) Scott of Royse City, Mrs. W. P. (Annie Bell) Boggess of Fort Worth, Miss Wilma Cockrell of Terrell, Mrs. Wade (Ruby) Fleetwood of Birmingham Ala: two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Duff of Ferris; Mrs. Mary Banks of Royse City, nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

The deceased came to Texas in 1877, settling first in Dallas County.  In the following year he moved to Rockwall County.  He came to Terrell in 1892 where he later became associated with the business interest of the town.

On September 1, 1893, he purchased one-half interest in the grocery business operated by F. M. George.  In January 1903, he purchased Mr. George's interest.  The following year he sold J. H. Cockrell, his youngest brother, an interest in this business.   At a later date he opened a business at 109 West Moore Avenue, where he remained in business until his retirement.
Mr. Cockrell was of Scotch Irish descent and always had a ready answer for any and all questions.  His rugged honesty and gentle manners won him many friends.   It is said of Mr. Cockrell that he never harbored a grudge against any man.  He therefore came to the end of a long and useful life without one enemy.  He was charitable to those who were less fortunate than himself.

Mr. Cockrell had long been a member of the local Masonic lodge.   His fellow Masons will conduct their regular service at the grave.
