Veteran to Be Laid to Rest in
Uniform of Confederacy
Fred Bowlden Dies August 24th


Clad in his Confederate uniform, Fred Bowlden, 86, retired grocer and resident of Texas for seventy four years, who died Wednesday, will be buried Thursday afternoon in Grove Hill Cemetery.  Last rites will be conducted at 2PM by the Rev. Paul O. Cardwell at the Welland Funeral Church, 2909 Live Oak in Dallas.  He died yesterday in his home.

Mr Bowlden was born June 5, 1847 near London England.  A year later he came to the United States with his parents.  His father was a scenic artist and the family traveled several years in the northern part of the nation and Canada before coming to Texas in 1858.  The family settled fifteen miles east of Kaufman where the elder Mr. Bowlden operated a general store, post office and a stage stand which was a horse-changing station for coaches traveling between El Paso and Marshall.
   When he was 16 years old Fred Bowlden enlisted in the Twentieth Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army and served throught the Civil War.  After the war he studied a year at Dolber's Commercial College in New Orleans and then he worked a year for the Texas & Pacific Railroad at Marshall.  A short time later he entered the grocery business and at the time of his marriage in 1876 to Miss Annie Satler at Wills Point, he owned three stores located in that city, at Greenville and at Tyler.  He came to Dallas in 1885.  For five years he operated a grocery store at Commerce and Jefferson Streets and then moved his business out to North Dallas where he operated it until his retirement.
   Before coming to Dallas he served one term as Commissioner of Van Zandt County.
   He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. J W Rupert; five sons, Claude J and Hubert C Bowlden of Dallas, Albert C and Oram L Bowlden of Irving and Harry C Bowlden of Houston; a brother, Harry Bowlden of Dallas; and a sister, Mrs. Rose Higgins of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  His home was at 2212 Kirby Street.
