A special telegram to the Galveston
News, dated at Lawrence, Kaufman
county, on the 25th inst., says: A man
named William Beard was killed a few
miles south of Kaufman yesterday even-
ing by Constable W. T. Still and a posse
from Kaufman. Still had a warrant for
Beard, and went to his camp to arrest
him. He found him about one hundred
yards fram his wagon, and ordered him
to unbuckle and drop his pistol, but in-
stead of doing this he drew it and com-
menced firing on Sill, who returned the
fire, hitting him in the left side, the ball
passing through the lower lobe of the
lung.
Still's horse became frightened when
he fired and ran off a few paces, Beard
still firing at him, when a Mr. Oldham,
one of the posse, fired at Beard with a
shot gun, hitting him in the breast with
four buckshot and killing him instantly.
While this was taking place, H. T. Nash
and Anthony Wilson arrested the two
other male members of the Beard party,
named Harris and Gaston, the latter a
lad of sixteen. Harris and Gaston were
taken to Kaufman and placed in jail,
and the body of Beard is now there
awaiting the coroner. One of the women
of the Beard party told Mr. Still that
Beard was one of John Wesley Hardin's
right bowers, and that Hardin would
never rest until he had killed them.
