The Kaufman Meteorite

Submitted by Kathey Hunt

During the late winter of 1892 a Meteorite fell to earth in Kaufman County.  It was seen and heard by county residents who reported to authorities that it had landed approximately 4 1/2 miles west/southwest of the town of Kaufman, near Scurry.

In early 1893 scientists from Dallas, who had heard about the meteorite from area residents, found pieces of it located at 32.35 Longitude & -96.25 Latitude.  What they discovered was one mass of 23 KG, and they took it to be analized.  Upon inspection, cut sections of the meteorite revealed a black matrix with larger than usual metal flakes, small troilite inclusions and many metal-rimmed chondrules.

The largest piece of the meteorite was acquired in the 1930's by famed Texas astrologer, Oscar Monnig, and a large piece of it is in the Oscar E. Monnig Meteoreite Gallery, a museum on the campus of Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, TX.

Other pieces have been bought and sold over the years and since 2002 pieces of it can be obtained on Ebay on line auctions.

Below is the piece of the meteorite, called the Kaufman, in the Monnig Museum.
