Letter by Lizzie Weatherly to Aunt Mary

Submitted by Carolyn Smith.

Dr. Williams died on May 17, 1920 so this letter must have been written shortly thereafter.  I do not know who most of these people are except that Miss Georgia, of course, was Dr. Williams' second wife - Georgia Noble, Clarence is C.R., Dr. Williams' son by his first wife - as were Horace and Mabel.  The "little children" must be Mary and Bronson (my dad), who were Dr. Williams and George's children.  I'm not sure who Aunt Mary is - possibly Mary Isabella Lacy, Dr. Williams' mother-in-law.

Wednesday

Dear Aunt Mary -

Nettie & I went out to Miss Georgia's Sunday afternoon.  I had come home the Wednesday before, and Nettie was going to take me back Friday.  But it rained Friday & Saturday and the roads were fearful.  We just happened to see some folks from out there Saturday after noon, who were in town in a wagon so Nettie came to my house and they came by for us.  We are so very glad we got there when we did.  Dr. Williams had gotten worse Saturday night and lay in a stupor till the last.  He never suffered at all, never even moved a muscle.  Miss Georgia is thank ful for that for he had feared that he would suffer intensely the last hours, how ever Dr. Park had told her that Dr. Williams would quite likely go just as he did.  Dr. Park was in Mineral Wells when Dr. W. took sick but just as soon as he heard of it he came home and was out to see Dr. W. Thurs. and Fri.  Mrs. Watkins & Alma went out Thursday morning with Nettie & Arch.

All the people out in that neighborhood were so very good and kind to Miss Georgia the entire time Dr. Williams was sick.  They seemed to think of every thing that should be done, and did it out of a heart of love.

Bro. Graham could not come to preach the funeral on account of the delayed train, so Miss Georgia asked Dr. Hubbard to make a little talk and the Methodist preacher from Kaufman offered prayer.  Roy Reierson & Jessie Hoffer Williams sang "A Perfect Day".  The services were held out in the front lawn and the burial was at the Johnson family graveyard by the side of his first wife.  A very large crowd attended.

Clarence & Horace came last Wednesday morning.  Horace goes back in a few days, but Clarence will stay longer.  They both are perfectly lovely to Miss Georgia and the little children.

Miss Georgia got messages from Ara, Lacy and you.

Aunt Mary, I'm so thankful that I had the pleasure of really knowing Dr .Williams.  As George Becker said "Only those who did not know him did not appreciate him.

I wish he could have kept strong and have stayed longer, but since he was strong no longer 'tis best that he did not linger.

Miss Georgia is just as brave and composed as no one but she could be.  I lover her so much and am so thankful that I could be of some service to her for she & Dr. Williams have been so very good to me and mine.

Mau??? is quite feeble and so sad and cheerless.  I'm sure her health has something to do with her despondency.  Aunt Mattie has been with us since last fall and that has been a pleasure.

I hear that Bess Fuller is real sick.

Miss Georgia looks for Mabel every day.  It is so sad that she could not have gotten here earlier.

We are going back to see Miss Georgia just as soon as we can.

With Love

Lizzie Weatherly
