Letter from Eva Noble to Mr. Dock Noble

Submitted by Carolyn Smith

I believe this letter informs of the death of my great-grandfather, Abram W. NOBLE.  I'm not sure who the letter is addressed to, but the writer is an aunt - Eva NOBLE.  Sue, May and George are sisters of Eva.

Dear Uncle

Mama requests me to write to you to let you know that our precious father is dead he died on the night of the 1st at 11:26 his last hours were hours of perfect peace.  He passed away without one struggle just so peacefully & sweetly as if falling asleep he was conscious of death & expressed a willingness & anxiousness to pass in to rest.  He had been in feeble health a month or more but was confined to his bed only a few days on Wednesday (the 26) he had a very hard chill was perfectly helpless until after his fever cooled down Thursday he was up a little Friday he went to the table & drank some soup for dinner late that evening Mama noticed a change in his looks went to him & asked him to go to bed he seemed nervous & excited asked her to stay with him which she did in a short while he was sleeping and never roused(?) up only for a short while at a time he would then talk to us said he had no pain never complained but was first as patient and grateful all the time seemed as thankful for every thing we could do for him.  We were all at his bed but George & Jennie.  Jennie wasn't able to come & we suppose that George was not as she has been quite sick with yellow jaundice Sue & May will return soon as Mama thinks it best to keep May in school.  Then Oh: then how lovely will be our humble home.  But Gods grace and precious promises will sustain us and brighten the lonely days to our bereaved hearts.  Write to us soon.

Your broken hearted neice

Eva Noble
