Archibald Black McDougald was a resident of Kemp, Kaufman County, Texas from 1849 until his death in 1905. My grandmother Tennie is in the photo of the Archibald Black and Elizabeth (Parks) McDougald Homestead in the "Kith & Kin" section of this website. My great-grandmother was Minnie Lee McDougald. I was given this document, about 10 years ago, by a distance cousin Winnie Richburg. It is my understanding from her that on July 4, 1949, the McDougald family held a celebration of it being 100 years since the McDougald came to Texas. This celebration was held in Kemp. This document contains a lot of history and has been an excellent source of information for me in searching for the McDougalds. |

July 4, 1949 Memorial Celebration Commencing the 100th Anniversary of the arrival of ARCHIBALD BLACK McDOUGALD to Kaufman County, Texas from Florida in 1849 The purpose of these notes is to list mostly in chronological order, some fragments of the family history in the life of this good man, beginning with the time his father came to America from Scotland and centering around the fact that it has been 100 years since he arrived in this community where he established a vest homestead that became the headquarters of other members of his father's family as they arrived from Florida in subsequent years. It is not the purpose herein to list all his relatives and their descendents and the events of their lives, since each branch of the family has a history all its own. Time does not allow a more lengthily recounting of their history at the present gathering. It is our earnest desire to pay tribute on this occasion to the courage and fortitude of this sturdy pioneer who, like so many others of his day, came to Texas from other states and helped carve a new civilization of an existing wilderness. A. B. McDougald's father, John McDougald was born in Scotland, August 15, 1793 and migrated to America with his brother Duncan McDougald in 1814 when he was 21 years of age. They settled in the Scotch settlement of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina where John married Miss Katie Black, March 23, 1819. To this union, six children were born: 3 boys and 3 girls of which A. B. McDougald was the first child. In order of properly orient the listeners, and especially younger members of this family and friends, it might be well at this time to list the children of A. B. McDougald and his first wife, Miss Nepsie Buie and by his second wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Parks. Together with members of their immediate families in order to better understand who "Uncle Archie" McDougald was, and then list his brothers and sisters a little later. A. B. McDougald and Nepsie Buie were married in Quincy, Florida February 21, 1843. Her father was John Buie, veteran of the Indian Wars who was born in Tattnall County, Georgia in 1803.
