William H Gardner was the son of James William Gardner & Sarah
"Sallie" Beck, who came to Kaufman County Texas in 1850 from
Indiana.
He was born 22 Mar 1859 in the same house at which he died on 6 Nov 1929.
His father died in 1879, after his three eldest brothers died in the Civil War. Because of the hardships following the war William remainded faithful to his mother and in keeping up his family's farm. He did not marry until he was 33 years old. On 18 Dec 1892 he married Rebecca Fidora "Dora" Pitts. She was born 12 Feb 1872 and died 8 Feb 1960. To them 6 children were born:
- Homer Edward Gardner 1893,
- Myrtle Mollie Gardner 1895,
- Cordia May Gardner 1898,
- Lula Johnnie Gardner 1900,
- James William Gardner 1903,
- Herman David Gardner 1905.
William & Dora and many of their children are buried at College Mound, where William's parents are interred.
