Comments:According to Tombstone he was born 1841 & died 1890. It says: "Age'd 49 Yrs". He is listed on the 1890 Kaufman County Mortality Schedule as a Federal Army War Vet. His Army papers had date of birth as 1846. John owned a restaurant and a bath & boarding house on the Kaufman Public square called "Matney's". A person could board out meals & baths there on a daily or weekly bases. For many years his step-son George M Kelley worked for him and through George's job as County Jailer they had a contract with the County to feed the prisoners in the jail and on the poor farm. Proof of this can be seen in the Kaufman County Commissioner's Court Minutes during the years 1876-1892. After John's Death, Mary kept the restaurant open for another 5 years with the help of George. She also owned a Boarding house on the corner of Jefferson & 4th in Kaufman up until her death. He enlisted in the Union Army 05 Mar 1864 at Chicago and was mustered into the 12th IL Infantry, Co G on 18 Apr 1864 at Pulaski TN under the command of Capt R S Thompson & was mustered out at Louisville KY 10 Jul 1865. His Muster Roll Pay records show he was in Rome GA in August 1864 & participated in the burning of Atlanta, that he was injured in August 1864 when hit in the right knee with an axe by another soldier while on fatigue duty and had to be hospitalized for 2 months in Raleigh NC & he was then guarding prisoners of war at Hiltonhead SC in Nov & Dec 1864. Mary drew a U S Army Widow's Pension, according to "Soldiers, Sailors & Marines of the Civil War". File# TX2826178 | |||
