PIONEER WOMAN FORMERLY LIVED IN KAUFMAN COUNTY;
NOW LIVES IN BRAZOS, PALO PINTO COUNTY

"Mrs. Martha Ann Mackey, 90, who was believed by many in this section to have passed away is still living at Brazos in Palo Pinto County and has recently been added to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram pioneer rolls, according to Mrs. G. R. Stovall of this city, who has just completed a visit with Mrs. Mackey.  Mrs. Wallace Wilson, Mrs. Gus Darst and Mrs. W. C. Witt of Terrell are nieces of this pioneer woman.  Mrs. Mackey was born in Tishimingo, Miss., but has lived nearly all of her 90 years in Texas.  Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Pinckney Stovall, came to Texas in a caravan of ox wagons when Martha Ann was a child and settled in Kaufman county where they raised cotton on a farm between Kaufman and Terrell for a number of years.  Martha Ann married William Drue Mackey March 15, 1870 and five children were born to them.  Mr. Mackey died in 1925.  Martha Ann's father and a brother were in the Confederate Army, her father an officer.  Her grandfather fought in the Mexican war.  One of the family's stories has to do with an estate in Scotland, said to belong rightfully to Gillis and Patterson heirs in the United States and involves the kidnapping of a Scottish youth of noble blood by an uncle.  The boy was Mrs. Mackey's great grandfather, a soldier in the revolution from Kentucky, according to the Star-Telegram.  Mrs. Mackey now sews and pieces quilts without using glasses and continues very active.  Many of her people, she says, have lived to be more than 100 years old, being hardy Scotch-Irish folk, "most all of them Baptist and Masons," she adds.  According to the Star-Telegram, Mrs. Mackey has 28 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren."

Martha Ann Stovall married William Drew Mackey
on 19 March 1873 in Kaufman TX
