W. L. Huff was born in Brunswick Co VA on 18th May 1850. He came to Texas 3 Dec 1871 and worked as a bookkeeper in a dry goods store at Snow Hill in Titus Co TX from the day of his arrival until May 1875. In Titus County he married Susan Frances Bridges, daughter of J. R. Bridges. William Huff then removed to Kaufman County in 1876, where other Huff family members were residing, and was soon employed as a express messenger and agent for the Texas Express Company, which caused his removal to Tarrant County. He was the first messenger that ran over the T. & P. Railroad from Dallas to Fort Worth. He resigned from that job due to failing health and returned to Kaufman County in the latter part of 1877 , then was employed for a short time as bookkeeper for the firm of Edwards and Jones, merchants in Terrell . Afterwards he was employed as bookkeeper for Frank Houston, continuing in that position when the house changed to Mulhall, Scaling & Houston, extensive dealers in cattle, and staying there until the fall of 1882, when he was elected to the office of District Clerk of Kaufman County. In 1892 he was employed as Cashier at the First National Bank of Kaufman with Herbert T Nash & T J Shannon. In 1880 he was enumerated on the Federal Census in Terrell, Kaufman County In the late 1890's Huff moved to Ft. Worth, Tarrant Co TX. In 1900 he was enumerated on the Tarrant Co Census William L Huff died in Tarrant County before 1910. Land Marks in Kaufman, Kaufman County, TXThe Huff-Park Home was built by Mr. W. L. Huff in 1889 and bought by Dr. J. W. Park in 1892. This colonial home has ten large rooms, two wide halls, six fireplaces, nine large closets, three large porches and a big attic. Having been built of yellow pine with cypress siding the house has weathered the years well. Located at 201 N Wykagyl in Kaufman, the Texas Historical Commission placed a Texas Historical Marker on the property in 1971. |
