George Barnett was born 2 Aug 1810 in SC, son of Richard & Susanna Smith Barnett, married 11 Mar 1830 in Lawrence Co AL to Minerva Green.
George migrated from AL to Itawamba Co MS by 1836 and was in Red River Co TX by 1846, where he is listed on the Poll Tax Roll that year. By 1849 he was living in Kaufman Co TX. He died in Kaufman TX 3 Dec 1888 and is buried next to his wife in Kaufman City Cemetery.
On April 1, 1853 George was elected County Clerk of Kaufman County TX and held that office until May 3, 1855.
He served in the 13th Brigade of Texas State Troops at the onset of the civil war - his age kept him from enlisting in the CSA with three of his sons - Alfred, James & William.
George Barnett's Probate was filed in Kaufman County 1 Mar 1889, file #559, with his son, Robert H Barnett as Executor. Details are in Kaufman Probate Minute Book B, pgs 339-340 & Book C, pgs 195-199.

Known Children of George & Minerva
1. Caroline Barnett
Born circa 1831/1832 AL
**No evidence of this person found in records of Kaufman County except for the 1850 Census. However, there is a possibility Caroline was still living when Minerva Green Barnett died. Minerva's Obituary stated 7 of her 12 children survived her and there were 5 known deceased children at that time (although there is no mention of her in George's death notice.)
More research is needed to clarify Caroline's existence.
NOTE: Some researchers say this is Susan (C) Barnett, who married 1856 in Cherokee Co TX to Hayden J Taylor, but that woman was not this person.
2. Elizabeth Jane Barnett
Born 21 Jan 1833 AL
Died 10 Jul 1923 Kaufman Co TX

He was the first Kaufman County Surveyor elected in 1849. He was elected Kaufman County Tax Collector & Assessor, serving that office 1876-1880.
