Not all the men who were living in Kaufman County in 1861 joined the Confederate States Army when the Civil War began. Some were loyalists to the Union, whether by conviction or by dedication to their families or place of birth. Some of the men left Texas and made their way to the closest place where they could enlist in the Union Army, others joined the Confederacy here and then deserted to join the Union Army. Other men from the county fought for the Confederacy and were captured, then elected to pledge an oath to the Union and fight in the Union Army.
After the war ended, some of these men came back to Kaufman County, however, most of them chose not to, whether their reason was their desire to seek a new residence or from fear of retaliation.
