"..the Confederacy needs Texas, gentlemn.  No one, No where, outfights a Texian!"
Jefferson Davis, 1861

Since the time of the Texas revolution, the men of Texas have had the reputation for always being ready to take on a fight - against the Mexicans, the Indians and as Texas Rangers.  Their fighting capabilities was perceived no differently after Texas joined the Confederacy and began fighting in the Civil War.

Once while preparing his battle plan, General Robert E. Lee asked his Aide if the troops were ready.  "Only the Texas brigades", was the reply.  Sadly, but with a prideful grin, Lee acknowledged his Aide's response to his question.

"The Texas brigades are always ready."
