Kaufman Sun - Jan. 10, 1884
"Col. Hallonquist's death was received in Kaufman from Terrell Wednesday. His remains were brought to Kaufman by his brother, Dr. Frank Hallonquist and buried the same day. Hallonquist was a teacher in Kaufman for many years and a member of the most distinguished families of this county and of his home in South Carolina."

"Details on the death of Jas H Hallonquist, who killed himself on the 9th inst. by taking chloral. Reason appears to be financial embarrassment. He graduated from West Point, was a lieutenant in the US Army. During the war he was Chief of Artillery under Gen. Bragg. He never married and retired from business two years ago."

For Hallonquist's service at Fort Sumter, at the very beginning of the war, the following was written:
"During the bombardment, I observed specially the behavior of the
troops at Fort Moultrie, and at Captains Butler's and Hallonquist's mortar
batteries. At all these posts the energy and spirit displayed alike by
officers and men could not be surpassed, I believe, by any troops in the
world."

J. H. Hallonquist was appointed State Engineer and Superintendent of Public Works by Governor Throckmorton. He was commissioned 5 Jan 1867. When hewas commissioned, he was asked to serve temporarily without pay until a salary could be appropriated. His duties primarily involved inspecting and appraising railroads in Texas. He was removed from office by the military under the Reconstruction Acts on 30 Aug 1867.
