TERRELL PIONEER CEMETRY

Also known as
The Old Graveyard, Irvine Family Graveyard,
Mineral Wells Cemetery & Breezy Hill

Terrell, Kaufman County Texas

Terrell Pioneer
Photo of the Terrell Pioneer Cemetery.

History:  Probably the oldest burial site in what is now the town of Terrell Texas.  It contains the remains of some of the first pioneer families to settle in what is now Kaufman County.  It contains some of the oldest existing tombstones in the county.

Oldest inscribed Birth Date:  1810 - Jesse Pipkin
Oldest inscribed Death Date:  1851 - Robert Alexander
Site contains remains of Civil War veterans.

TEXAS STATE HISTORICAL MARKER:

Historical Marker

"The Old Graveyard"

This small historic cemetery, also called the Irvine Family Cemetery, predates the town of Terrell by more than twenty years.  The first burial was that of Robert Alexander, nephew of W D Irvine, in 1851.  Now located within the city limits, the cemetery began on land owned by the Irvine family.  It contains the graves of Irvine family members, their neighbors and descendants, many of whom were responsible for founding this community.  The cemetery also contains many unmarked burials, The last known burial to take place here was in 1956.

Erected in 1996

ADDITIONAL MONUMENTS:

A granite monument was placed in the graveyard in 1996 by descendants of the persons interred there and the Kaufman County Historical Commission.   Listed on it are the names of persons known to be buried in the cemetery. **SEE BELOW FOR LIST

Monument

NOTE:
At the bottom of this record is a List of those tombstones that were listed on an abstract done in 1992 by Harold O'Neal and Hulon M Miller, and on the abstract done in 1995 by Marie Reasonover, which are no longer found to be in the cemetery.

The following Enumeration was done Feb. 2, 2003 to determine exactly which tombstones remain in the cemetery.  Since 1979 the site had been abstracted twice, not enumerated.  Both of those records included information that is not actually written on the tombstones and they both included information on persons for whom no tombstones have ever been found.

All information below is transcribed here EXACTLY as it is written on the tombstones that still exist in 2003 - enumeration was done by Kathey Kelley Hunt & Donald Hunt.

ENUMERATION

NOTE:
In this enumeration there are vast differences in the spelling of names when comparing what was recorded in 2003 against all previous records.  The spellings above were meticulously copied and are as they appear on the tombstones.  A good example of differences is Babbie Weir (which probably is "Baby" misspelled by the stone mason)   All other reports have the name as Bobbie, however, the tombstone is easily read and has Babbie.
