Crandall Community Cemetery
Once Known As Mt. Pilgrim Cemetery
Crandall Black Graveyard
The Woodlands

LOCATION:
The cemetery is located on the west side of FM 741,  .2 miles north of Hiway 175 in Crandall city limits.

HISTORY:
Site has been used by African-American citizens of the county since before the 20th century.**  Local lore is that many former slaves are interred there in unmarked graves on the area that now borders the north frontage road of Hiway 175. ** It is said by descendants of persons interred there, that before Hiway 175 was completed, the site was considered to be "deep in the woods", which is why it was called the Woodlands by the locals.**  It is also believed that during the construction of the highway in the late 1960's and early 1970's that many early graves located on the far south side of the site were destroyed by the road crews, as old tombstones which marked early graves have been missing since that time.***  There were also many graves between the years 1900 - 1940 which were marked with bois d'arc stumps and wooden markers, which all disappeared after 1940.**  Originally the site encompassed over 2 acres, yet today the site appears to be less than an acre in size.  From 1965 until 1998 there was a non-denominational church on the site.  It was destroyed by arson in March 1998.

From 1965 until 1998 there was a non-denominational church on the site.  It was destroyed by arson in March 1998.
