ANNOUNCEMENT

The Veterans Memorial Association has announced that a granite marker has been received from the Government for the first grave in Kemp Cemetery.  The grave is that of George G. Porter, veteran of the 18th Regiment, Texas Volunteer Infantry, Confederate States Army.  He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, September 5, 1841 and died in this community September 22, 1866, the next year after The War Between the States had ended.
His grave is located on what was then a wooded knoll and the cemetery built up around it during the ensuing 90 years since his interment.  He was a relative of Mrs. E. C. Hull, Mrs. Ed Ware and others, Mr. Hall plans to mount the marker on a concrete base.
Due to the significance of its being the first grave in the cemetery, the Veterans Memorial Association is trying to make arrangements to obtain an appropriate bronze plaque to be imbedded in the base when it is poured.  Mr. Hall has agreed to defer construction until the Association finds out what can be done about it.
