Green / Parvin Cemetery

Originally Known as Union Grove Cemetery

Union Grove 1939

This is a photograph made in 1939 by Retha Green Waits of the Union Grove Cemetery - now known as the Green - Parvin Cemetery.

This photo substantiates reports made by several persons who lived in the area of the graveyard from the 1920's until 2002, and reported that up until the early 1970's there were more than 30 tombstones in that place, where there is now only 1 - that of Statira Crawford.

Originally the cemetery was called Union Grove, the same as the surrounding community, but was later called Parvin (or Parvin Park) and Green as early as 1900.  This information can be found in Kaufman County History, Vol II, section C-15.

In the last 15-20 years the following persons made statements concerning the original condition of the cemetery:  Wathina Culver, Nathan Culver, L. Q. Myles, Marie Reasonover, Edna Waits Hunt, Esther Hugghins, Betty Ruth Ford - all recalling that as late as the 1960's there were at least 30-35 tombstones that dated back to the 1870's.  Also, that as late as the 1960's when the grandchildren of Retha Waits played in the cemetery, there were at least 20 tombstones still standing.

Supposedly, all grave markers, except the Crawford tombstone, were removed by Woodie Ford in the 1970's.

On the back of the photo is written:
1939   Union Grove Grave Yard
Graves of Peter Parvin and family

Below is a list of persons known to have been buried at a cemetery called "Green" within Kaufman County.  It is believed that the name "Parvin" was attached to the site because it was so close to Parvin Park.

If you have information on the location of this site, or know of other persons who are interred there, please contact Kathey Hunt.
