COLLEGE MOUND CEMETERYOn Jan. 22, 1845, twenty-nine year old Andrew H. Henry left his home in Johnson County, Missouri and came to the place now known as College Mound. Many graves of pioneers and their descendants such as the Becks', Ratts', Zinks', Gardeners', Fogelmans', Claridas', Loves', and Baileys' may be found here. While there may have been graves in the cemetery as early as 1841, the two gravestones of Annie Beck are the first documented burials. The Beck's originally gave their name to the place - Beck's Mound - but shortly thereafter, a young man from back east came with the dream of establishing a college and called the hilly area College Mound. Even though his dream never came to fruition, the name stuck and College Mound became an incorporated town with a post office in 1850.
Veterans representing all the U.S. Military conflicts since the Mexican War are buried here and also casualties of the 1918/1919 Influenza Epidemic, which killed more Americans than combat deaths of the 20th Century combined. The little white house that stands in the cemetery protects the grave of Francis E. Thompson. Her dying request was that rain never fall on her grave. On the very day she was buried, her son John Thompson, a carpenter, constructed the house that resembles the College Mound Church. Mrs. Thompson was the grandmother of Bill Henry Bailey, whose friends and family honor him with this plaque on the occasion of his 100th birthday. September 17, 2001 |

This is the oldest known tombstone in Kaufman County and is original grave stone of Anny Beck, wife of John J. Beck, who came to Texas in 1845 from Indiana. It is obviously hand-inscribed and home made from a cement-type material. She was the first known burial in the College Mound Cemetery, having been aware of her terminal illness, she chose the site herself right after arriving in the area. There was a monument put on John J. Beck's grave in the early 1860's that also had an inscription for Anny, however, the dates on it are incorrect. | |
