Clack - Payne Graveyard

Kaufman County Texas

Cemetery lies approximately 300 yards north of a private residence in Scurry, Texas.  Located appx. 1 mile west of FM 148 and north of Co Rd 4091.  It is accessible only by permission from property owner.

The entire area is overgrown in briars and vines, covered in many broken tree branches and more than a foot of leaves.

There is a wrought iron fence which appears to be 120 years old, and is in excellent condition; not missing any finials & showing damage only where it appears that a tree branch hit it's east side at one time.  The area inside the fence is over grown in briars and brambles.  The fence is 9' 2" in width, 18 ' in length & 3' 8" in height.  There is no gate.

Inside the fence is one tombstone, standing in excellent condition.  It reads:

Sacred to the Memory of
Frances Adelia
Wife of John A Payne
Born June 10, 1849
Died Jan 15, 1869
She is Gone but Not Forgotten

*She was the daughter of Kaufman County Pioneer Obediah M Stephenson; married 1867; died in childbirth with son, Frances G Payne, who survived.

Eight feet east of the fence there is evidence of two graves.  There lies a piece of a tombstone which has only legible "M. Cook".  There are other large pieces of limestone which is undoubtedly from tombstone(s) on the ground in this area.

Ten feet east of that place there is a stone cradle, broken tombstone & footstone.  The tombstone was laying flat on the ground in January 2003.

Micajah U. Clack gravestone

The tombstone reads:

Micajah U.
Son of F.M. & M.V. Clack
Born June 8, 1873
Died June 1, 1887
Our Darling has gone Before
To greet us on the Golden Shore

The footstone reads:
M. U. C.

*He was the nephew of Rev. Micajah Rogers Clack, renown Rockwall pioneer.  Parents were Francis Marion Clack & Mary Viney Free Clack, who lived on the property.

Area is not fenced and is trampled by cattle daily, as it lies adjacent to a small barn housing hay and feed where the land owner feeds their livestock.  The property owner has used the area to store an old bath tub (leaning against the old fence) & broken farm implements.

The property owner reported that about 20 years ago she laid three tombstones that were on the outside of the old fence within the confines of the fenced area so they would not become broken or lost, however, they were not found in 2003.
