In the early 1980's there were at least 3 tombstones in this little graveyard, which is located on the C A Lovejoy Survey on land once owned by William H Carter. In the early 1990's the tombstones were removed, supposedly by the land developer, who built a house near the site. The tiny, tree-lined graveyard is in the back yard of that house. The only known burial here is that of Fred B Bryan. Fred Bryan's son, John, was married William Carter's daughter, Laura. We know he was buried here from his obituary, which was in the December 6, 1883 edition of the Kaufman Sun. It reads: "Mr Fred B Bryan of this county died last Monday, the 3rd, 3 miles south of Kaufman. Buried by the Masonic Fraternity at the Carter Burial Ground." Fred Bryan was born 1828 in NC & died 03 Dec 1883 in Kaufman TX. He was married to Eliza Jane Wheeler & they had 5 children: John Council, Leonidus, Laura, Robert & James. Fred was in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, serving with Co. K of the 2nd Partisan Rangers. Any information about other persons who might be buried at the Carter Burial Ground, or Carter Family Graveyard is welcome. Please send the info to Kathey Kelley Hunt. |
