Robert Lee "Bob" Hicks

Robert Lee Hicks

  Robert Lee "Bob" Hicks was born 18 Jan 1867 in Henderson Kentucky.  He was the son of Marcus Lee Hicks and Ann Slayton.  Bob Hicks migrated to Crandall Texas sometime before 1890, where he married Zona Francis Green on 10 Dec 1891 in Kaufman County.  Zona Francis Green was the daughter of Samuel "Pep" Green and his wife Martha Jaco, all of whom were from McMinneville, Warren County, Tennessee.  The Green family resided in Crandall according to the 1900 census.

Land records from the Kaufman County Courthouse indicate that Robert Hicks bought and sold land and town lots in Crandall during the years 1893 through 1896.  He owned and operated a Mercantile and a Saloon in Crandall for five years.

To the right is a coin issued and used in Robert Hicks' Saloon business.

Bob Hicks died on 6 December 1898, he is buried in Blackland Cemetery.
His death notice was printed in the Kaufman Sun 16 Dec. 1898.  There is a large tombstone of Robert Lee Hicks in the Blackland Cemetery.

Robert Hicks and his wife Zona had four children, all of whom were born in Crandall.

  1. Baxter, born September 1892 - killed in WWI
  2. Bennett, born 11 June 1894 - a WWI veteran
  3. Robert Lee Hicks, Jr., born 23 Feb 1896 - a WWI veteran
  4. Bessie, born 1898

After his death his widow Zona married Elias Jesse Burns.  They farmed in the Crandall area at least until 1910 and then moved to Blossom, Texas, where both are buried.
