Kaufman Co., TX 1910 Federal Census:
North Texas Hospital for the Insane

By Abby Balderama

The North Texas Hospital for the Insane is located in Terrell and is now known as The Terrell State Hospital.  For more information on the North Texas Hospital for the Insane see:   The Terrell State Hospital (aka the North Texas Institute or the Hospital for the Insane).

In 1910, the employees of the North Texas Hospital for the Insane are listed first, followed by the male patients (with an occasional female mixed in) and then by the female patients.  For the most part, the patients were listed alphabetically.  Most of the patients were white (caucasian).  Patients were born in TX, AR, MS, AL, FL, GA, LA, SC, NC, TN, KY, WV, VA, IA, WI, MO, NE, IL, OH, OK, IN, MI, MN, PA, MD, NY, NJ, MA, VT and CA.  There were also patients born in foreign countries:  Mexico, Germany, England, Austria, Sweden, Ireland, Denmark, Hung.-Magyar, Italy, France, Norway, Turkey, Greece, Russia, Canada and "Mid-Ocean".  There were also patients listed as being born in "U. S." and "Unknown".  Most of the patients are listed by both first and last names but there were patients known only by their first name:  "Conrad", "Frank" and "Sue", and "Unknown Deaf & Dumb Man" (ie. could not hear nor speak) and "Unknown Negro".  One male patient was blind.  Several patients were Civil War Veterans of either the Union or Confederate Army.

Every effort was made to prepare an accurate transcription of the census, however, as is usually the case for transcriptions, mistakes were probably made.  The microfilm is not always clear and I have inserted "?" when I had a lot of trouble deciphering the writing.  The ages were, at times, very hard to read and it was difficult to distinguish between 3s and 5s, 7s and 9s, etc.  Please be aware that misreadings and typos are not only possible but likely.  Please remember to consult the original records yourself to verify the information and remember that mistakes may have also been made in the original.
