Kaufman Co., TX 1900 Federal Census:
North Texas Hospital for the Insane

By Abby Balderama

The North Texas Hospital for the Insane is located in Terrell and is now known as The Terrell State Hospital.  For more information on the North Texas Hospital for the Insane see:   The Terrell State Hospital (aka the North Texas Institute or the Hospital for the Insane).

In 1900, the employees of the North Texas Hospital for the Insane are listed first, followed by the patients.  Most of the patients were white (caucasian); there were also some blacks and a few Mexicans.  Patients were born in TX as well as other states and foreign countries; most of the places of birth for their parents were given as "Unknown" and the month and year of birth was usually left blank.  There was one "Unknown Negro" male; everyone else had at least a first name.  A few had no last name given.  There were several deaf patients and a few listed as "B." which may have meant blind; these are added in the right margin as there was no column for this in the 1900 census.  Patients often had an occupation listed for them.  Among the occupations given were:  Art Teacher, Artist, Barber, Blacksmith, Book Agent, Bookkeeper, Bootblack, Candy Maker, Carpenter, Carpenter's Wife, Clerk, Cobbler, Confectioner, Convict Guard, Cook, Cow Boy, Dairyman, Dressmaker, Drug clerk, Druggist, Editor, Engineer's Wife, Farm Laborer, Farmer, Farmer's Daug., Farmer's Wife, Gambler, Hotel Keeper, Hotel Porter, Laborer, Lawyer, Liveryman, Machinist, Mechanic, Merchant, Merchant's Wife, Miner, Minister, Music Teacher, Musician, Nurse, Painter, Peddler, Piano Teacher, Physician, Printer, Printer's Wife, Railway Man, Sailor, Salesman, Servant, Sheepherder, Shepherd, Shoemaker, Soap Maker, Stenographer, Stockman, Stone Cutter, Tailor, Teacher, Telegraph Operator, Tramp, Watchman and Well Digger.

Every effort was made to prepare an accurate transcription of the census, however, mistakes may have been made.  Please be aware that misreadings and typos are not only possible but likely.  Please remember to consult the original records yourself to verify the information and remember that mistakes may have also been made by the enumerator in the original.
